Former President Trump Testifies in New York Fraud Trial, Clashes with Judge

Tense exchanges with Judge Engoron marked Trump’s testimony.

New York, November 6, 2023 – Former President Donald Trump took the stand in a New York courtroom on Monday to testify in a high-stakes fraud trial that could have far-reaching implications for his business empire. The trial, stemming from a $250 million civil lawsuit filed by the New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office, alleges a yearslong fraud scheme involving Trump, his two oldest sons and several executives.

During his testimony, Trump’s responses often strayed from the questions posed by a lawyer from the Attorney General’s office, resulting in repeated clashes with the presiding Judge Arthur Engoron. Donald, under oath, took the opportunity to voice his dissatisfaction with Judge Engoron, stating, “I’m sure the judge will rule against me because he always rules against me.”

The trial revolves around allegations that Trump and his co-defendants inflated the value of the Trump Organization’s assets and Trump’s wealth to secure better loan and insurance terms. These allegations have been vehemently denied by the defendants, with Donald consistently asserting that he is being pursued for political reasons.

As the proceedings continued, He provided long-winded answers to questions about the valuations of various Organization properties. Judge Engoron’s patience was tested, prompting Christopher Kise, one of Donald’s attorneys, to request leniency. Kise remarked, “With this witness, it’s far more efficient to listen and take it all in,” eliciting laughter from Kevin Wallace, an attorney for the state.

Judge Engoron’s frustration became evident as he struggled to maintain order in the courtroom. His voice rose, and his microphone struggled to handle the sudden change in volume as he declared, “No, I’m not here to hear what he has to say. I’m here to hear him answer questions. Sit down!”

In response to Trump’s lengthy responses, Judge Engoron indicated that he was considering drawing negative conclusions from Trump’s testimony, stating, “We got another speech. I implore you to control yourself if I can. If you can’t, I will. I will excuse him and draw every negative inference that I can.”

It’s worth noting that the trial proceedings have not been televised, as the judge did not allow TV cameras in the courtroom. As a result, Trump’s questioning has not been live-streamed. CBS News, however, has reporters present to witness the former president’s testimony and will provide updates on the trial’s developments.

The outcome of this trial will play a significant role in determining the future of His business empire, and the proceedings continue to draw considerable attention and scrutiny.
